Brett Forrest Match Report - Edinburgh Uni Thistle

Brett Forrest is our media official covering the Women's team games. His report from Sunday's game is below.

Edinburgh South Women recorded a crucial 3-1 win over Edinburgh Uni Thistle at Holy Rood on Sunday.

With the teams level on points going into the game, both sides knew it was important to get the win in the first Edinburgh derby of the season.

Edinburgh South made four changes to the side that comfortably beat East Fife 0-7, with a trialist making an appearance.

A scrappy start to the game saw neither side fashion out any real chances. However, when Eilidh Buchanan replaced Niamh Inglis following an injury, the game began to open up.

Getting in behind the high line Edinburgh Uni were playing, the sixteen-year-old Buchanan got one on one with the keeper but her decision to pass to Rhea Kilgallon was the wrong one as the ball was won back before the striker could shoot.

Not long after, in the 36th minute, the scoring was opened after Buchanan pressed the defence, won the ball back on the edge of the box and curled in a shot that was dinked over the keeper and into the top right corner.

Just four minutes later, the home side, and Buchanan, doubled their goals after Kilgallon played a ball over the top, which was fumbled by the goalkeeper, allowing Buchanan to tap it into an empty net.

The away side got one back just before half-time after a corner was headed in.

The second half was a cagey affair with both teams cancelling each other out until the trialist found a way through in remarkable fashion. Running to intercept an Edinburgh Uni pass, she shot first time from just inside the opposition half, looping the ball over the keeper and into the net.

The game started to open up after that, with South creating a couple of chances to kill the game off, including a well worked solo run by Sarah Conolly who had her shot well saved.

Following the win, Edinburgh South now sit second in the league with the best goal difference. The team will now be going into the winter break with Christmas spirits, and ambitions, soaring.

Smith: Promotion still the goal

Manager Alfie Smith commented:

“It was very scrappy football wise, but the girls dug deep and fought to get the three points.

Our aims are still to challenge to win the league if possible and gain promotion through the playoff. It will be hard as there are a lot of good teams in the league but that is the kind of performance you need to do that”
